Dr Mbagaya was appointed consultant in 2014, following training in Clinical Biochemistry & Metabolic Medicine in the Yorkshire Deanery. He is a Consultant in Metabolic Medicine & Chemical Pathology at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust. With an extensive background in metabolism, lipidology, and diabetes, Dr. Mbagaya is one of the few cardiometabolic specialists in the UK. He is committed to providing holistic, patient-centered care and works collaboratively with cardiologists, dietitians, and other specialists to manage complex metabolic conditions. His areas of expertise include cardiometabolic medicine, insulin resistance, cholesterol disorders, electrolyte imbalances, and inherited metabolic diseases. He is a highly experienced Consultant in Metabolic Medicine, offering private consultations at Nuffield Chesterfield Hospital in Bristol, Spire Bristol Hospital, and 25 Harley Street, London. He also provides virtual consultations for patients seeking expert advice on metabolic and related conditions.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Mbagaya is actively involved in research. He has served as a national chief investigator, principal investigator, and sub-investigator in several groundbreaking studies related to novel cholesterol-lowering medications, some of which are now widely used in clinical practice. He was also an early prescriber of injectable cholesterol medications, GLP-1 agonists, and other newer treatments with cardiometabolic benefits.
Dr Mbagaya provides a clinical and diagnostic service, addressing general biochemistry, laboratory endocrinology and metabolic aspects of disease. His laboratory interests include biological variation, patient safety, clinical pathway development, personalised medicine and integration of technology in patient care. Dr. Mbagaya holds a leadership role as Clinical Director for Laboratory Medicine at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Trust, and he is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol. He is passionate about teaching and regularly delivers nationwide courses for GPs on metabolic disorders and laboratory medicine, training the next generation of medical professionals.
